Churchill, the English and Irish 2,000 Guineas victor, was the fancy for the St James's Palace Stakes but finished outside the places as Barney Roy stormed home for trainer Richard Hannon ahead of Aidan O'Brien's Lancaster Bomber.

His mood was even sweeter as his nemesis Aidan O'Brien's 2000 Guineas double victor Churchill couldn't summon up his namesake's fighting spirit, and was left floundering in fourth as Godolphin's Barney Roy won the feature St James's Palace Stakes.

Given Churchill's odds were even shorter than Ribchester's starting price of 11-10 favourite, it is understandable that Fahey, 51, has endured sleepless nights in the build-up to the big race.

The filly destroyed her rivals in the Queen Mary Stakes a year ago but had far more on her plate on her return on Tuesday.

The 20-1 victor scored for American trainer Wes Ward who'd earlier been foiled in the Queen Mary as Heartache beat the odds-on Happy Like A Fool.

"He loves that fast ground and I'd imagine we'll go to the Sussex Stakes next".

"I think his improvement has come about since we've started training him by himself in a quiet place like Beckhampton".

Al Jalila seemed engrossed in the racing action, enjoying a sweet celebratory hug from her father at one point during the day.

"He was disappointing at Sandown but after the race he had a bit of a mucus in his lungs, which is unusual for him, so I'm hoping that's a reasonable excuse", said Charlton.
