Sir Alex Ferguson thinks Manchester United's participation in the International Champions Cup will prepare the squad well for the season ahead. Despite relatively poor league form, however, the Red Devils found success in the Europa League, emerging as winners of the competition.

After three years he moved up to the A team and has not looked back since, winning three Portuguese league titles, playing in the Champions League and making his worldwide debut against Turkey in March 2016.

Manchester United's new signing Victor Lindelof has said he agreed to sign for the club after speaking to manager Jose Mourinho over the phone.

Jose Mourinho has not yet stated that the former Fulham enforcer will be surplus to his requirements for the 2017-18 Premier League campaign, but it is believed that United's Portuguese manager will allow the player to leave. "The expectation is always there and the matches we'll face in the ICC are all big ones". And with the 20-time league champions expected to challenge for major trophies next term, Mourinho seems to have made himself very busy during this summer's transfer window.

The Portuguese will be able to gauge his side's development on the club's tour to the United States, which sees them play Real Madrid, Barcelona and Manchester City in the International Champions Cup.

United are touring the U.S. as they take part in the International Champions Cup before a Super Cup final against Real on August 8.

Sir Alex Ferguson is looking for Manchester United to "accept the challenge of beating the best" as they go in search of more silverware.

Essien might have played out a season-long loan under Mourinho in 2012-13 but the one-year deal at Real Madrid stands far from their biggest connection.
