Iran's top leader opposes Iraqi Kurdish independence vote

Highlighting the necessity of maintaining integrity of Iraq, he emphasized that "you should be vigilant vis-à-vis the Americans as they can never be trusted; the USA and its followers are against independence, identity and unity of Iraq".

Ayatollah Khamenei warned that any emergence of division and conflict among Iraqis would pave the way for Washington to harm Iraq, stressing the importance of preventing the presence of United States forces in Iraq under the pretext of training.

Leader of Islamic Revolution emphasized that Washington's opposition to ISIL is not real and neither the United States, nor their regional allies are truly seeking destruction and uprooting of ISIL.

"Today Daesh is fleeing Iraq and this is an admirable success", Khamenei said in reference to the jihadist group as he received Iraqi Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi in Tehran.

Kurdish officials in Iraq say the referendum will be held in September 25.

He also said that Iraq will speed up its economic cooperation with Iran after eradication of terrorism.

Ayatollah Khamenei expressed hope that the Iraqi government would manage to solve the problems it faces and said, "The Iraqi government must be strengthened in every way and all political and faith movements in Iraq are duty-bound to support the sitting government".

"The liberation of Mosul is the symbol of the end of terrorism and a victory for Iran, Iraq, Syria and all the countries of the region that are fighting against terrorism", Rohani said.

He dubbed destruction of ISIL a possible objective and called for continuation of supports by Iran 'during and after fight against ISIL which will be stage of stability, peace and reconstruction'.

Khamenei met with Iraqi PM Abadi after he visited Tehran on Tuesday as part as his tour to neighbouring countries that also includes Kuwait.

Khamenei accused the United States and its ally Saudi Arabia of creating IS and said he opposes the presence of American forces in Iraq.
