I believe the United States of America should be at the front of the pack.

"I can not, in good conscience, support a deal that punishes the United States - the world's leader in environmental protection - while imposing no meaningful obligations on the world's leading polluters", Trump said, before singling out China and India. "The Paris Agreement is the collective achievement of leaders around the world, and it can not and will not be derailed by the ignorance of one man whose term of office is highly uncertain", Brune added.

It's a promise by 195 countries to each develop their own plan to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. "The EU deeply regrets the unilateral decision by the Trump administration to withdraw the USA from the Paris Agreement".

That also leaves the door open for a future American president to re-enter the agreement.

The decision by the Trump Administration to withdraw from the Paris Agreement on climate change is deeply disappointing, especially for the citizens of vulnerable nations throughout the world. And he claimed staying in the agreement would cost the US 2.7 million jobs, citing data from the National Economic Research Associates. "It can be a good gesture, but it is going against these market forces". Economic opportunity has also played a role, with massive investments in solar and wind helping dramatically drive down the cost for renewables worldwide.

In January, China announced the suspension or cancellation of plans to build an additional 100 coal-fueled power plants. They, along with the lawmakers who represent them in Washington, hailed the decision as a victory for their way of life.

Even in regions of the U.S. where coal is plentiful, electric utilities are increasingly shifting to cheaper, cleaner-burning natural gas. The accord aligns with the company's own policy on carbon emissions, she said.

Leaving the agreement is largely symbolic, Boykoff said.

At the same time, he said he would continue to reach out to the United States federal government to identify carbon emissions reductions on which they might still be able to collaborate.

What would withdrawal mean for climate efforts overseas?

Under the historic agreement, the US would have been expected to contribute that amount to the operating budget of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change, the accord's coordinating agency. He added that he was anxious about his sons' futures and "how much worse things might get" if the issue of climate change isn't dealt with immediately.

U.S. Senator from New York Chuck Schumer.

Coal has suffered a steep and sustained decline in the US since cheap, abundant supplies of cleaner-burning natural gas supplanted it as the main fuel for power generation.

The Prime Minister's Office released a statement from Trudeau reacting to the USA decision to abandon the global climate deal.

Would U.S. withdrawal unravel the agreement?

That depends on whether the US leaves or attempts to change the terms of its deal.

"Today is a win for chief strategist Steve Bannon, who with Environmental Protection Administrator Scott Pruitt urged the president to jettison the Paris deal".

Secretary of State Rex Tillerson, who supported staying in the agreement, swung by the White House on Wednesday for an afternoon meeting with the president.

"And so with the United States not in the agreement, I think that it strengthens the conversation towards ratcheting up again", Boykoff said.

"If Trump or any new president wants to go in and negotiate a new deal, fine".
