The event has always been a chance for Democrats and Republicans to put partisan politics aside for one night - but especially so on Thursday. Jeff Flake was with Rep. Steve Scalise when he was shot, and has been checking in on him.

Democrats remain deeply upset about Trump's win and by his presidency, and frustrated over how to channel the energies of a restive and angry base. After accepting it graciously, Barton cracked, "Next year we won't be so nice".

Bailey, on crutches, threw a one-bounce first pitch to Roberto Clemente Jr. before Trump's video address.

The Friday visit announced by Ryan's staff comes with Scalise in critical condition at MedStar Washington Hospital Center.

After operations over the past two days to control internal bleeding and stabilize his vital signs, Scalise's condition has improved, but he remains in the hospital's intensive care unit in critical condition, Salva said.

Pelosi and other Democrats charged that Trump himself bears responsibility for the virulent state of political discourse - and some said for Wednesday's attack as well, given his embrace of aggressive rhetoric on the campaign trail and the outbreaks of violence at some of his rallies.

Thursday evening's baseball game went on as scheduled.

Sava said he told Scalise's family that "I am not declaring victory until he's playing ball in his back yard with his family".

"We're all praying for him", House Speaker Paul Ryan said during the interview right before the game, adding that Scalise's wife "Jennifer and the kids are here".

Lawmakers noted their good fortune in having armed protectors on hand - "Thank God", they exclaimed over and over - and said otherwise the shooter would have been able to take a huge deadly toll. He wore a purple boot. Griner, who is still in the hospital, was shot in the ankle. Both had appeared on the House floor earlier today.

Aguilar played outfield for the Democratic team and hit a key single that pushed the Democrats' lead to 7-2 in the bottom of the third inning. The score wouldn't move again, and after seven innings, the Democrats emerged victorious.

The game kept numerous trappings of previous years: Each congressman had his own cheering section, with Democrats down the left field line and Republicans on the right. James Hodgkinson had been a vocal opponent of the Republican party.

Scalise has always taken the game very seriously, according to his Capitol Hill colleagues. Still, the divide was good-natured, for once. Scalise was given time in between surgeries to recover and gain strength for whatever surgeries and procedures may be next. "The bullet traveled across his pelvis, fracturing bones, injuring internal organs and causing severe bleeding", a hospital statement said. Thursday's Congressional Baseball Game for Charity, a century-old tradition for which Scalise was practicing, combines them.

The charities are the Boys & Girls Club of Greater Washington, Washington Literacy Center, the Washington Nationals Dream Foundation and, after Wednesday's shooting, the Capitol Police Memorial Fund.

Those same members of Congress will be asked this summer to approve a multimillion dollar budget boost for U.S. Capitol Police.

Major League Baseball Commissioner Robert D. Manfred, Jr., offered his thoughts and prayers after the shooting and endorsed the decision to play ball.

"It was a little emotional", Rep. Dennis Ross (R-Fla.) told the Daily News after the game.
