In spite of tweet, lawyer says Trump not under investigation

A member of President Donald Trump's legal team said Sunday that Trump is not under investigation by the special counsel, an assessment at odds with a Washington Post report last week and seemingly with a tweet by Trump himself on Friday.

Trump fired FBI Director James Comey, sent out spokespeople and surrogates with a far-fetched cover story to explain the dismissal, and then told NBC's Lester Holt that the real reason for the firing was Comey's pursuit of the Russian Federation investigation.

Deputy Attorney-General Rod Rosenstein has replaced Attorney-General Jeff Sessions as head of the Russia-Trump probe.

The denial Sunday by Jay Sekulow, one of several personal lawyers Trump has hired to represent him in the Russian Federation case, is the latest of many examples in which the president's aides and lawyers have scrambled to avert a public-relations mess created by Trump's tweets, off-script remarks or leaked private conversations.

He told CBS' "Face the Nation" that there has been no notice from the office of the special counsel, Robert S. Mueller III, that Trump is under investigation. That's raised speculation that the special counsel investigation might extend to Trump's business empire, which the president has tried to shield from public scrutiny.

Veteran lawyers who have represented presidents during high-stakes legal cases said Trump's repeated comments about the Russian Federation investigation were extremely unusual.

The attorney explained that the tweet the president sent in which he said he was under investigation was in response to a Washington Times story that said he was.

The lawyer, Jay Sekulow, contended the tweet was not a confirmation of the investigation, but instead a response to a report in The Washington Post. "Witch Hunt", had nothing to do with any official investigation into President Trump's activities.

"I can't imagine a scenario where the president would not be aware of it", Sekulow replied. I really believe that.

Separately, a former White House lawyer, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said there was nothing stopping Trump or his lawyers from asking Mueller whether Trump was under investigation.

"I can't go into the particulars of our closed investigation", Schiff said. "Ultimately, whether he believes it or not, the work's going to move forward", he added.

TAPPER: So the president said, "I am under investigation", even though he isn't under investigation? Angus King, an independent from ME, stressed that the probe will likely last for a long time.

"You just said he's being investigated", Wallace shot back again. "So here's what you have", Sekulow said.

"The MAKE AMERICA GREAT AGAIN agenda is doing very well despite the distraction of the Witch Hunt". I'm under no illusion that many Republican House and Senate members have any affection for, or loyalty to, Trump.

The senator noted that it was a very complex matter, which involved thousands of pages of intelligence documents, many witnesses, hence a lot of information needed to be processed.

Yet Trump's tweets in recent days condemning the actions of his own Justice Department have reached an intense level, revealing the president's increasing agitation about the probe and the attention it has drawn.
