Scalise had another surgery Saturday, the latest in a series of operations that's stretched from the day of the attack Wednesday, and the doctors said he "continues to show signs of improvement".

James T. Hodgkinson, 66, allegedly opened fire on a Congressional baseball team as Republicans were practicing for an annual game to be played at Nationals Park Thursday.

The hospital is also treating Capitol Police officer Crystal Griner who the doctor says was shot in the ankle and is in good condition.

Congressman Steve Scalise is in serious condition.

Trump, after visiting the Louisiana Republican at the hospital, on Wednesday said Scalise was "in very tough shape - but he is a real fighter".

A source said investigators are not sure of the significance of the names and it is not clear whether this was a list of people the attacker was targeting.

Dr. Jack Sava gave details of Scalise's injuries, his condition at the time of arrival and and his chances of recovery Friday afternoon. After Scalise was shot in the hip, the bullet traveled through his pelvis, fractured bones and injured internal organs.

The surgeon said there were hundreds of bullet fragments in Mr Scalise's body, but "we have no intention to try and remove all the bullet fragments at this point". Brooks said the list was short and the other names he was told of were also GOP congressmen. "I feel a lot more optimistic than I did two, three days ago".

"His risk of death now is substantially lower than when he came in", he said.

His family said they appreciate the support they've received from lawmakers and the president, and are thankful for the bravery of the special agents.

Bailey was spotted Friday in the Capitol, on crutches and out of uniform, accepting congratulations from fellow officers.

Lobbyist Matt Mika was shot multiple times and critically injured. His family said in a statement he was showing "positive results" and was expected to make a full recovery.
