USA lawmakers returned to regular business on Thursday and prepared to play their annual charity baseball game, one day after a man who had expressed anger toward President Donald Trump opened fire on Republican legislators, leaving a senior congressman in critical condition. He was hit in the left hip, suffering injuries to internal organs, broken bones and severe bleeding, in Wednesday's shooting.

Scalise is still in critical condition but is doing better, according to a statement from MedStar Washington Hospital Center where the congressman is now confined. Five people were injured, including second baseman and House Majority Whip Steve Scalise of Louisiana, who is still in critical condition.

Like other Republican lawmakers who were on that field in Alexandria, Virginia, Scalise was preparing for the annual Congressional Baseball Game that - despite the horrific shooting - continued as scheduled on Thursday evening.

Three others were injured by the gunfire from suspected shooter James Hodgkinson, who was killed by police.

The AP said many of those who played wore LSU hats to honor Scalise, who graduated from the university.

The political parties play against each another.

The running tally of results has Republicans and Democrats both at 39 wins, 39 losses and one tie.

Sava estimates there are hundreds of bullet fragments in Scalise's pelvis and says doctors don't intend to try to remove them all, as that could cause more harm than good.

President Trump delivered a video message before Thursday's Congressional Baseball Game where he told the participants, "By playing tonight, you are showing the world that we will not be intimidated by threats, acts of violence, or assaults on our democracy".

In his first at bat, Murphy, who has played in every congressional game since his election to Congress in 2007, calmly took four balls without a swing and walked.

Sava said that after being released from the hospital, Scalise would "require a period of healing and rehabilitation".

The crowd got to its feet when the announcer mentioned Scalise.

"Today is about coming together and celebrating the the greatness of Steve Scalise". The others were Capitol Police officers Crystal Griner and David Bailey; Zack Barth, a staffer for Texas Rep. Roger Williams; and Mike Mika, an activist and former congressional staffer.

More than 20,000 tickets have been sold and more than $1 million raised for charities, including the Capitol Police Memorial Fund, which was added as a beneficiary after the shooting.

The wife of wounded GOP congressman Steve Scalise says she is thankful for all the prayers and warm wishes her family has received since her husband was shot at a baseball practice.

"I think anybody that ever played baseball, the dream was to play in a major league stadium", Richmond said previous year.

"I'm prayerful he will pull through, and I hope he does", Democrat Cedric Richmond said.
