Congressman Scalise in critical condition after shooting

Scalise, 51, the No. 3 House Republican leader first elected to the House in 2008, was in stable condition and undergoing surgery.

President Donald Trump said in a statement that he and Vice President Mike Pence were aware of the shooting and are "saddened by this tragedy". It did not identify the victim.

The gunman, identified by law enforcement as James T. Hodgkinson, 66, was shot dead by police. "Then I heard another one and (saw) some people running, so I just laid down on the ground and held onto my dogs to make sure they would not run off", he said. Hodgkinson worked as a home inspector.

Barton said there were four Capitol Hill police officers there, and two Alexandria officers arrived within five minutes.

WASHINGTON (AP) - In a press conference, President Trump says the man accused of shooting five people, including Rep. Steve Scalise has died.

Michigan Congressman Fred Upton didn't release a statement, but posted on facebook and twitter saying "My heart is going out to my friend Steve Scalise, his family, & all my colleagues, staff, & fearless law enforcement who were injured in the shooting this morning". He says the Justice Department will provide resources for a thorough investigation.

"Hodgkinson was among those taken to a hospital Wednesday, and President Trump announced that he had died from "his injuries".

"We are as ever awed by the tremendous bravery of the Capitol Police", he said, stating he'd talked to both officers after the shooting, right before one went in for surgery for their injuries.

Trump added, "We may have our differences, but we do well in times like these to remember that everyone who serves in our nation's capital is here because above all, they love our country".

This morning, at a practice for the Congressional Baseball Game, Whip Scalise was shot in the hip. "The gunman was over by the third base dugout with a clear view of the field".

"Scalise hit. Other staffers hit", Fox News reporter Chad Pergram tweeted on Wednesday just before 8 a.m.

Mr. Trump said on Twitter that Scalise "was badly injured but will fully recover". "Congressman Steve Scalise was also shot, as were at least two security officers and a congressional staffers".

"This morning marked the final practice for the Republican team for the year", he noted in a statement. They were in good spirits despite the heat and humidity as they prepared for the congressional baseball match that pits Republicans against Democrats. "And, I think this is sort of a wake up call as to how you can take that angst and that anger and go too far".

"Wow. I'm gonna play", he said.

Those injured include Majority Whip Rep. Steve Scalise, R-La., and two Capitol police officers, according to multiple reports.

Hodgkinson's social media account reflected his support for Bernie Sanders during the presidential primary.
