CNN's Kirsten Powers Confronts Jason Miller For Calling Kamala Harris 'Hysterical'

Mark Warner, the Virginia Democrat who sits next to Burr and is the vice chairman on the committee - interrupted Sessions' answers before and after Harris spoke. Sure, there have been the occasional profile of Harris in national outlets since her time as California's attorney general, but she has not drawn anywhere near the sustained level of national attention as other women in statewide elected positions, despite the fact that California is the most populous state in the union.

At some point, Harris was on the attack, Sessions was floundering, and the white men decided they had enough. Here is everything you need to know from our Kamala Harris wiki.

Harris, who has burst into the national political arena during the federal probe into Russia's meddling in last year's presidential election, seems to be taking the criticism of her questioning approach in stride. Ron Wyden was tougher on Sessions than Harris was but wouldn't be described as "hysterical". Harris let him answer.

Sen. Kamala Harris, a career prosecutor, is putting her skills on display - and some of her Republican colleagues are not taking it well.

"It makes me nervous", Sessions said of Harris' rapid-fire style of questioning. Fair. But she should be able to ask the question. By sort of not quite invoking it, I think the attorney general is creating an additional step where first the Senate intelligence committee would have to decide that they wanted to push back and try to compel him to answer.

Miller replied, "I don't think that Sen". What's worse, Harris wasn't even displaying anger; she was just doing her job and doing it well.

DAVID GREGORY: Can I just say I know a little something about this from my wife who is a, as you all know, a top trial lawyer and who faces this in court all the time.

CNN contributor and Trump supporter Jeffrey Lord added to the fiery exchange between Powers and Miller, saying, "Hysteria is a neutral quality".

Harris tweeted herself that she was simply trying to discern why Sessions was refusing to answer certain questions during his testimony.

"But he wasn't hysterical", Powers said.

Harris went to Howard University in Washington D.C. where she majored in economics and political science. As my Slate colleague Christina Cauterucci noted of the Twitter reaction at the time, "two long-serving white male legislators working together to stop a new female senator of color from getting an answer to a simple question was not a good look". Elizabeth Warren (D-Mass), who was censured during Sessions' confirmation hearing earlier this year and inspired the rallying cry, "Nevertheless, she persisted".

Women are often labeled with negative, coded terms like "hysterical" whenever they display any emotion, particularly anger or frustration.
