Shiv Sena's support is crucial for NDA as the party has a total vote pool of around 25, 893. But instead of coming to us with the proposal they announced the candidate.

Kovind, a Dalit leader from Uttar Pradesh.

Shah had met Sena chief Uddhav Thackeray at Matoshree on Sunday, apparently assured him that the BJP parliamentary board would consult all NDA constituents before finalising its nominee.

The BJP's presidential candidate had said in a debate in Parliament that "if the appointing authority" of judges, that is the president, could be censured, so could the judiciary.

The Trinamool Congress supremo noted: "Everyone knows that the President plays a vital role in protecting the nation and the constitution".

The NCP on its part said it would take part in the Opposition meet on June 22.

So far, the Bihar chief minister has publicly refused to commit any support to the BJP's candidate. I don't want to comment on this.

Sena smells vote-bank politics: NDA constituents barring the Shiv Sena today welcomed the nomination of Ram Nath Kovind for the president's post.

Sources say that being Dalit, Kovind is unlikely to face opposition from other parties.

A lawyer-turned-politician, NDA presidential candidate Ram Nath Kovind, 71, has been a champion of rights for Scheduled Castes, Scheduled Tribes, OBCs and women since his student days. "Now, they have named a person with RSS background. We are against it, but we will have to discuss the issue within the CPI and with other opposition parties". "A meeting will be held soon to discuss the same", he said.

"With that option being ruled out, the BJD was sure of supporting the NDA's candidate", said the MP preferring anonymity. But even before the ruling regional party took an official position, BJD MP Baijayant Panda had words of appreciation for Kovind.

He thanked Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the BJP family for reposing trust and entrusting such a big responsibility on "an ordinary citizen". "Somebody of Sushma's (Sushma Swaraj) or Advani's (BJP veteran LK Advani) stature should have been chosen". He had earlier called on Andhra Pradesh chief minister Chandrababu Naidu of TDP to seek his support for the NDA's presidential nominee. "Just because he was the leader of Dalit Morcha of BJP they have made him the candidate", Mamata said. I have spoken to two or three other Opposition leaders, they are also surprised. A final decision by the Opposition parties, however, is expected on Thursday.

"All those who are members of the electoral college.I will meet leaders of major political parties and seek their support.I hope that every citizen will support me", he said.
