Brooks Koepka wins US Open at Erin Hills with record-equalling performance

Nine players reached double-digits under-par at some point during the tournament, also a U.S. Open record.

Koepka was also tied for fourth in the US Open in 2014 - albeit 10 shots behind runaway victor Martin Kaymer - and shot 71 at Erin Hills in the 2011 US Amateur, although he failed to reach the matchplay stages.

Johnson, whose flatline personality borders on catatonic at times, would never be mistaken as a motivational speaker.

"Brooks is a good friend of ours, and happy for him".

No one was more solid from start to finish than Koepka.

"It was a long phone call for us", Koepka joked. For us it was like two minutes.

ERIN, Wis. (AP) - The list of places Brooks Koepka had to go to win golf tournaments looks like a page straight out of a travelogue.

Eventually, Koepka made his way back to his homeland in 2015, and won on the PGA Tour at the Waste Management Phoenix Open.

Koepka became the seventh first-time major victor in a row.

Koepka's winning total of 16-under equals the lowest score to par for a U.S. Open, matching Rory McIlroy's victory at Congressional in 2011 on a par-71 layout.

"A three-wood 300 yards yesterday for Justin Thomas", he said, referring to Thomas's approach to the par-five 18th that led to an eagle for a U.S. Open record score of nine-under 63.

"I made the birdie right there at 14 ... then he birdied 14, 15, 16, and that was kind of lights out", Harman said. "You've got to tip your cap: He went and won the golf tournament on the back nine".

"He wasn't missing shots from 13 onwards, " Fleetwood said. "But he's played so well in the majors, and played great in the Ryder Cup (at Hazeltine)".

Harman finishing runner-up at 12-under par along with Hideki Matsuyama.

Brian Harman's bogey on the par-4 12th gave Koepka a one-stroke lead in the final round of the U.S. Open.

The putts and strategy were nice, but on the last, the longest hole on the course, Koepka made a decision to remind us all of that absurd pop he does have.

Fleetwood, a 26-year-old Brit, shot 72 and finished 11-under. The top finishing major victor at Erin Hills was Sergio Garcia, who ended up tied for 21st.

He shot a 69 to finish at 1 over for the tournament.

Unlike Spieth or Johnson coming out of college programs, when Koepka left Florida State University he did not go the traditional route to the PGA Tour by starting in Canada, or making his way on the Tour.

This day, though, was all about Koepka from start to finish.

Of the early players, Jordan Spieth is one of the few that is under par for the day. He looked utterly unflappable along the way.

Three quick wins in Spain, Italy and Scotland earned him automatic entry to the European Tour, where he won in Turkey in 2014. I scrapped a little bit for it, but I felt fine. Seven players already have reached 10 under or better this week - Koepka, Harman, Thomas, Fleetwood, Fowler, Charley Hoffman and Matsuyama. Koepka got there on the 16th, a par-3 that also didn't accentuate his power advantage. He played all over the world in relative obscurity until he got good enough to make it on the PGA Tour. "I think that built some confidence", Koepka said. They prefer the lush courses at home - and the cars and the jets.

Koepka became the third straight American to win the title.

Throughout the weekend's playing, the leaderboard was cluttered and no real victor was in sight. "Good ball-striker, good putter", Koepka said. "Obviously, Brooks dealt with it amazingly". He came and kicked everyone's (behind) over there, didn't he?
