Five people, including a Republican lawmaker, staffer and two Capitol Police officers, were injured when Hodgkinson reportedly opened fire at Eugene Simpson Stadium Park. Hodgkinson was shot by Capitol Police and died from his injuries. "Violence of any kind is unacceptable in our society and I condemn this action in the strongest possible terms", Sanders said Wednesday morning on the Senate floor. According to ABC News, Hodgkinson, of Bellevile, Ill., had several run-ins with the law, including domestic violence and several unlawful-weapons-discharge arrests.

The Daily Beast is reporting that Hodgkinson called Republicans "racist & sexist" on his Facebook page."Trump is a Traitor", Hodgkinson wrote in a May 22 Facebook post. He has DUI, resisting arrest and fleeing charges from January 7, 1993, that were dismissed after court supervision. They said they heard around 50 shots fired in the woods near Hodgkinson's house.

"I am sickened by this despicable act", he said. This year's game, scheduled for Thursday, the supported charities are the Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater Washington, the Washington Nationals Dream Foundation and the Washington Literacy Center. Court records show that his legal trouble started in the 1990s.

Until recently, Hodgkinson ran a home-inspection business out of his house in southern IL.

The Belleville News-Democrat, a local newspaper, posted a photograph of Hodgkinson protesting outside a post office there in 2012, wearing sunglasses and a goatee and holding a homemade placard that read "TAX the Rich". "Let's work to get this country back".

Hodgkinson was still in IL as recently as March, when the St. Clair County Sheriff's Department responded to a "shots fired" call and found Hodgkinson shooting a hunting rifle.

In October 2011, he applauded the Occupy Wall Street protesters in NY and Boston, writing that the demonstrators "are exhausted of our do-nothing Congress doing nothing while our country is going down the tubes".

Though there are no other legal problems listed in St. Clair County, which includes Belleville, since 2011, Hodgkinson did come to the attention of local law enforcement as recently as March 24 of a year ago. Neighbors had called the St. Clair County Sheriff on March 24 with complaints of gunfire.

"I actually blocked him at one point", the woman said.

His brother, Michael Hodgkinson, told the New York Times that the two were not close and that he knew his brother was not happy with the election results but said he never expected him to commit such a crime.

In a televised address, Mr Trump described Mr Scalise as a "very good friend", a "patriot" and a "fighter".
