However, Jenkins' film only has the record for the largest United States opening: at the worldwide box-office, Fifty Shades of Grey retains the title having grossed $242 million compared to Wonder Woman's opening $223 million.

Do you agree with Wan's sentiments?

Such an accomplishment means the film, which is directed by Patty Jenkins, now holds the record for the biggest opening out of any movie directed by a woman. Before she was Wonder Woman, she was Diana, princess of the Amazons, trained to be an unconquerable warrior. "Fighting alongside man in a war to end all wars, Diana will discover her full powers...and her true destiny". The previous record holder, "Fifty Shades of Grey", brought in $85.2 million in 2015.

The success of "Wonder Woman" gave the summer box office a much-needed charge.

The film, which had a production budget of $150 million, garnered an "A" CinemaScore from audiences and a 93-percent score on review site Rotten Tomatoes, which makes it one of the best-reviewed superhero movies of all time. That, combined with an worldwide take of $122.5 million from 55 markets gives the movie a global opening of $223 million.

Last week's top film, "Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales", slid dramatically to $21.6 million in its second week. It landed in third place, behind Fox's "Captain Underpants: The First Epic Movie". And in China, the movie's total has climbed to a mighty $143 million. It's made $386.6 million internationally, driving the Disney sequel to more than $500 million globally.

Paramount and Skydance's Baywatch, which bombed in its USA debut last weekend, rounded out the top five with $8.5 million for a domestic total of $41.7 million. Overseas, Baywatch opened to $23.8 million from 31 markets, including a pleasing $5.8 million in the United Kingdom, not all that far behind Wonder Woman.
