17 dead, 15 injured in truck-bus collision in UP's Bareilly

The bus was on its way to Gonda. One of the passengers is critically injured and has been hospitalised, police said.

Both vehicles caught fire after the diesel tank of the bus burst following the collision. The collision occurred as the bus driver was speeding past a junction, the report added.

Fire tenders were rushed to the accident site. He also announced ex-gratia of Rs 2 lakh each to the kin of deceased, Rs 50,000 to severely injured and Rs 25,000 to those having minor injuries.

Authorities said that the truck was coming from Shahjahanpur district and the driver is absconding. The police were looking for him. While 22 charred bodies have been recovered from the bus, those injured have been admitted to nearby hospitals where the condition of some are said to be serious, the official said.

Most passengers were asleep when the accident happened, however, some did manage to escape.

Senior police officers including Inspector General of Police S.K. Bhagat, Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Jogendra Kumar and other officials are monitoring the rescue and relief operations.
