UN Envoy Nikki Haley Says Western Wall Belongs To Israel

"We've always thought that the Western Wall was part of Israel".

The said legislation, enacted in October 1995, states that as the USA operates its embassy in the capital of every country except in Israel, it should move its embassy to Israel's capital.

A USA source said Israeli Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu has already been informed of Trump's decision.

He said USA special envoy to the Middle East Jason Greenblatt has arrived in the region and was scheduled to meet Palestinian officials on Wednesday and Thursday in preparation for Trump's visit. "This is how it has been and how it will continue to be", Defense Minister Avigdor Lieberman.

This new development happened days ahead of a visit by President Donald Trump on an ultra-sensitive status of Jerusalem.

Netanyahu recently tweeted a meeting with United States ambassador to Israel, David Friedman, where he said he was looking forward to meeting with Trump next week.

Israel objected and sought to make it a public visit with Netanyahu escorting him, which USA diplomats rejected, with one noting Israel doesn't have sovereignty over the Western Wall.

Hier's remarks came after a press briefing earlier in the day by Trump's National Security Adviser H.R. McMaster, who declined to give direct answers when pressed as to whether the US regards the Western Wall as part of Israel. McMaster did however confirm that no Israeli leaders would accompany Trump on his visit to the site.

The letter, organized by the American Christian Leaders for Israel (ACLI), overseen by the International Christian Embassy Jerusalem's USA branch, cited the Jerusalem Embassy Act of 1995, which acknowledges Jerusalem as "the seat of Israel's President, Parliament, and Supreme Court, and the site of numerous government ministries and social and cultural institutions". So much of what goes on is in Jerusalem.

President Trump's ambassador to the United Nations has gone where the White House of late has been reluctant to go - she has publicly endorsed the idea of moving the American embassy in Israel to Jerusalem and placed the Western Wall in Israel.

Israel's Channel 2 news reported Monday that the Israeli authorities had asked whether Mr Netanyahu could accompany the president and whether Israeli news would be allowed to film there, but were rudely told by a member of the USA consulate in Jerusalem: "What are you talking about?"

The call between Trump and Netanyahu came immediately after Trump placed a call to King Abdullah II of Jordan, a call that was announced by the White House. His campaign platform made no mention of an independent Palestinian state.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu chairs a weekly cabinet meeting in Jerusalem May 7, 2017. That distinction between Jerusalem and Israel reflects the USA position that the city's fate is an issue for Israelis and Palestinians to work out through future peace negotiations. But since taking office, Trump has called for restraint in settlement construction. The Palestinians seek the West Bank and Gaza for a future state, with east Jerusalem as their capital.

The expectation was that Trump would make an announcement regarding Jerusalem during his upcoming May 22 visit to Israel.
