Trump then defended both deputy White House press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders as "a lovely young woman", who had substituted for Spicer during the briefings on Wednesday and Thursday, when he was serving duty with the Navy Reserve, and calling Spicer "a wonderful human being" and "a nice man".

Already Trump's decision appears to have emboldened the Senate intelligence committee investigating into Russia's election interference and the president's associates, with lawmakers announcing a subpoena for former national security adviser Michael Flynn. The White House may have given Knight a waiver, the investigative outlet reported, but there's no way to know because the administration has also ended the government's publication of those waivers through the Office of Government Ethics. President Trump tweeted, refering to now disputed talks the two had before Trump summarily fired Comey on Tuesday night.
