"I hope you can let this go", Comey wrote, quoting Trump in the document, which CNN has not viewed but which was described by the sources.

Hundreds of vacancies remain in policy making positions that are directly connected to Mr Trump's priorities and his campaign promises.

Trump was speaking in a joint press conference with Colombia's President Juan Manuel Santos.

"Truly I get the impression that many United States media are working in this vein".

"Well, I respect the move, but the entire thing has been a witch hunt", Trump said, echoing a tweet he sent out earlier on Thursday. "It's special", Trump said, adding that the bureau will soon have a director "who's going to be outstanding".

Former Trump aides Michael Flynn and Paul Manafort have emerged as key figures in the FBI's investigation into Russian campaign interference, which has just been taken over by a special counsel, four law enforcement officials told NBC News.

US President Donald Trump has denied all allegations that he tried to pressure fired FBI Director James Comey into dropping a Russia-related probe, and called the appointment of a special counsel to probe claims of his collusion with Russian Federation a "witch hunt".

"Trump feels really, really, really, bad about firing him, and he genuinely thinks if the investigation is over Flynn can come back", said one White House official. If I get what I want, it'll be the biggest tax cut in the history of our nation.

Asked if he'd ever done anything that would merit impeachment, Trump said, "I think that's totally ridiculous".

"Everybody, even my enemies, have said there is no collusion", he said.

Mr Trump later said he had already made a decision to dismiss him and was thinking of "this Russian Federation thing".

The White House also disputed reports that Trump ignored warnings in November from President Barack Obama to not hire Flynn, who lost his job in the Obama administration as the director of the Defense Intelligence Agency.

But a report in the New York Times this week that Trump allegedly asked Comey to end the investigation undercut the president's rationale and has led to accusations from some in Congress that Trump was attempting to obstruct justice. "So, if you're talking about that, I see no secret here".

"In the light of a very busy news week, a lot of people would like to get to the bottom of a couple of things - give you a chance to go on record here".
