Johnny Depp has gifted Ellen DeGeneres a portrait of an elephant after she spent years asking him to paint her one.

The 53-year-old's reputation has taken a number of blows over the past year following his messy divorce from Amber Heard, who accused the actor of domestic abuse, and his ongoing legal battle with his former business managers over missing funds, which his ex-representatives have blamed on his allegedly hapless spending.

ET caught up with the star at the premiere of his upcoming film, Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales, at the Dolby Theatre in Hollywood on Thursday, where he opened up about his daughter's flawless red carpet fashions.

Johnny Depp: "I just love the fact that he's unable - even more so than me - he's unable to finish a, to form a sentence, actually formulate a sentence that becomes vocabulary that actually works together". And you can count costar Orlando Bloom among their number. "Because, God knows he's been one of the most private and stand-up people I've ever met".

"I stole some of the kind of Perspexy, chunky diamonds that are on that black island that the ship gets wrecked on", he told ABC Radio.

Ellen said Alec Baldwin does a great impression on "SNL", but Johnny Depp said he hasn't seen it yet.

But, menacing though Captain Salazar is (I particularly dig the "drowned man" CG effect on his hair), the clip reveals one crucial weakness: ghosts can not walk on land.
