Safe Boating Week starts Saturday

The National Safe Boating Council will kick off its annual boating safety campaign with National Safe Boating Week, May 20-26. But because they wore their life jackets, it was an easy swim to the bank.

Indiana Conservation Officers join boating professionals and boating enthusiasts to heighten awareness of different life jacket types that are available, including inflatable life jackets, and demonstrate their comfort and versatility by wearing them to work. "I have never in all my years of working recovered a victim who was wearing a life jacket". That's why President Eisenhower instituted National Safe Boating Week almost 60 years ago. In Michigan, anyone under the age of 6 must wear a life jacket when on the open deck of any vessel, but wearing a personal flotation device is recommended for everyone.

Both events help usher in National Safe Boating Week which is annually held the week prior to Memorial Day Weekend.

North Country participants will gather, in life jackets, outside the Dobisky Center at the Ogdensburg Municipal Marina at 11 a.m. Saturday, May 20, for a reading of Ogdensburg's National Safe Boating Week Proclamation by Mayor Wayne Ashley.
