The 9.15 km (5.7 mile) Dhola-Sadiya bridge, strong enough to carry a 60-tonne battle tank, will reduce travel times from Assam to the disputed state of Arunachal Pradesh.

"Today is one of the greatest days for the people of Assam as the India's longest and Asia's second longest Dhola-Sadiya bridge is inaugurated by Prime Miniser Narendra Modi", Gogoi said in a series of tweets.

Soon after his arrival, Modi left for Dhola to inaugurate the river bridge. We are giving stress on development of roads, bridges, rails, air and waterways which are environment-friendly and economical. The 9.15-kilometre-long bridge to connect Assam state with Arunachal Pradesh is the longest bridge in India.

Modi said the bridge will lay a new beginning for economic revolution not only for the region but the entire country. He also addressed a public meeting in Khanapara in Guwahati.

Drawing a contrast between the 10-year UPA rule and the current government, he said the former was marked by a scam nearly every month while even the rivals of Modi dispensation have not been able to level a single charge of corruption against it.

Laying the foundation stone for the Indian Agricultural Research Institute at Gogamukh in Assam, Modi said: "On the completion of three years of the NDA government, I am announcing the launch of new scheme Sampada (Scheme for Agro-Marine Processing and Development of Agro-Processing Clusters)".
