One 16-year old male, who had been taken hostage by Godbolt, was safe Sunday afternoon MS authorities said.

CNN reports that Willie Cory Godbolt, 35, of Bogue Chitto, was taken into custody and being treated at a Jackson hospital for a gunshot wound.

A MS sheriff's deputy who was among eight people slain in a shooting rampage is being remembered by his boss as "a great guy". But "then he reached into his back pocket". Another of Godbolt's wife's sisters and her husband were the victims found dead at the third location. The deputy was also slain.

A MS man is in custody after a shooting rampage left eight dead, including a local sheriff's deputy.

A handcuffed Godbolt told the The Clarion-Ledger, in a brief conversation caught on video, that he went on the shooting spree because he loved his wife and children and he loves Bogue Chitto.

Mitchell (who is Godbolt's stepfather-in-law) said Godbolt had been arguing with his wife (who he is separated from) about their two children.

The Mississippi Bureau of Investigation says the 35-year-old Godbolt has been arrested and is in custody.

The dead included two boys, investigators said. Among the dead was a deputy sheriff that Godbolt said to a reporter was just in the way as he hoped to be killed by police gunfire.

The fallen deputy was identified as William Durr, 36, who had been with the Lincoln County Sheriff's Office for two years, according to the Daily Leader. The area is about 68 miles south of Jackson, the capital. Someone called the police, and a responding deputy became one of the victims.

Strain said charges have not yet been filed against the suspect, who was arrested in Brookhaven, and that it would be "premature" to discuss a motive.

Mississippi Governor Phil Bryant released a statement via Facebook: I ask all Mississippians to join Deborah and me in praying for those lost in Lincoln County. Bryant also praised the "sacrifice" by law enforcement officers to make us safe and serve their communities. Lincoln County Sheriff Steve Rushing said Durr was married and had an 11-year-old son.
