Memorial to Honor Fallen Law Enforcement Officers

The tradition, which dates back to 1962 and originated under John F. Kennedy, honors the lives of fallen officers and their service.

Congressman Chris Collins (NY-27) today released the following statement to recognize National Police Week and to highlight his intention to vote in favor of six legislative items throughout the week in support of USA law enforcement.

The U.S. House of Representatives will vote Thursday on a bill that makes it easier to seek the death penalty for those convicted of killing police officers.

He said he feels that he and the men and women of the Bullhead City Police Department "are very lucky".

Assistant Chief Constable Mark Bates, of Lancashire Constabulary, said: "Every single day, in forces up and down the country, officers put themselves on the line in order to keep the public safe. We focus on educating and empowering people to develop and implement solutions that build trust and collaboration amongst the various facets of our community".

During her address, she recalled Operation Matador, which took place last year and led to the arrest of more than a dozen members of the worldwide criminal gang MS-13, seemingly ending a two-year spate of murders and attacks perpetrated by the gang's local clique.

The Resident Officer Program of Elgin (ROPE) is one example of that, he said. The numbers I see that come out of our Crimes Against Peace Officers Unit are always staggering because, to me, they are more than just another filed case or sentencing.

Elgin's department, he said, is the the kind of big brother that encourages his younger siblings and sets the right example.

When you experience things like this, you can not help but appreciate the humanity behind the uniforms - a father, a mother, an aunt, an uncle, a friend, a colleague, a neighbor.

South Bend Police will have a ceremony Friday.

Authorities say the MS-13 gang, which has a national presence, is responsible for a series of savage slayings in Brentwood and Central Islip, with the body count of victims in incidents linked or thought to be related to gangs rising to 11 in the past year. The flags in front of the department were brought to half-staff. He said the ceremony was bittersweet. Officers believe it never gets easy serving as an officer, but it's worth it to protect their community.

"Really a good guy, a good heart and the thing about going to work for Brian was, is that we have a lot of the same philosophies when it comes to dealing with people and the public", said Reeves.
