As a person, Chris Cornell ended up being one of the mainstays of the grunge rock music.There are people who have put him in the same class as Kurt Corbain of Nirvana and Eddie Vedder of Pearl Jam.

Tributes to Cornell have flooded social media, paying respect to the singer, among them those from other musicians such as Led Zeppelin guitarist Jimmy Page, Billy Idol and Jane's Addiction and Red Hot Chili Peppers guitarist Dave Navarro. The cause of death is now unknown, though reports say that it is being investigated by police as a possible suicide.

Cornell died in Detroit.

Singer and songwriter Chris Cornell, a key figure in the 1990s grunge movement, died Wednesday night in Detroit, shortly after performing a show. Cornell's cause of death is unknown.

"He was found on the bathroom floor, our medical unit were called and he was pronounced dead on scene", a spokesperson for the Detroit Police said, according to the BBC.

Bumbery described the death as "sudden and unexpected" and said the rocker's wife and family were shocked by it.

The tour Cornell was now on with Soundgarden was set to wrap up in Oklahoma on May 27.

"We are investigating this as a suspected suicide", he confirmed to us. Cornell's work with Audioslave is not always viewed as having made as big an impact, but it was loved by fans around the world.

And he said in a statement to the Press Association that he could not process news of his death.

UPDATE: The AP reports that the medical examiner determined Soundgarden singer Chris Cornell committed suicide by hanging in Detroit.

Cornell, 52, was in Detroit performing with Soundgarden, which had embarked on a US tour in April, CNN reports.

A spokesperson for the Detroit Police Department wouldn't identify the victim, but told ABC News the victim's wife called a family friend to check on the victim. During the group's hiatus, Cornell pursued a solo career and performed in Audioslave with former Rage Against the Machine members Tom Morello, Brad Wilk and Tim Commerford.

The singles "Black Hole Sun" and "Spoonman" off the band's "Superunknown" album, which came out in 1994, earned them two Grammys.

Soundgarden reunited in 2010 and released their sixth album, King Animal, in 2012. A sad loss of a great talent to the world, his friends and family.
