The long-rumored couple stepped out for their first public event together at the Cannes Film Festival closing ceremony on Sunday, where they were spotted intimately chatting and warmly embracing after Phoenix won the best actor award for his performance in the drama You Were Never Really Here.

Phoenix looked shocked as his name was called as the best actor victor, with Mara sweetly urging him to head to the stage to pick up the award as they warmly embraced.

The actor apologized for his less-than-formal footwear as he took to the stage to accept his award from actress and Cannes jury member Jessica Chastain, explaining that the win was "totally unexpected".

Later on in the night, at a press conference, Phoenix told reporters, "Before I came here, I told my girlfriend it was going to be a really good experience because I was going to get crushed and that would be really humbling".

'I thought it would be great to know what it's like to be unanimously disliked.

"They were talking to one another nonstop", one source told People.

Although they've yet to officially confirm their relationship status, the connection between Mara and Phoenix was on full display for the star-studded affair. "Small talk between them". Phoenix, who was holding hands with 32-year-old Mara in the audience, turned to her in disbelief and asked: 'Do I have to go up there?' The pair were seen holding hands as they left the ceremony.

The film, a thriller about a war veteran's efforts to save a young girl from a sex trafficking ring, also stars Ekaterina Samsonov and Alessandro Nivola. "Like it fits. They seem a totally natural and easy couple".
