"What Comey did, [he] had good moments for me as a candidate", Trump said. Not to mention Congress, which has its own investigations underway. They also commented only on condition of anonymity to discuss private conversations.

March 8, 2017: During a cybersecurity conference at Boston College, Comey says he plans to serve his entire 10-year term, quipping, "You're stuck with me for another 6½ years". Indeed, during the campaign, Trump praised Comey for his announcement about Hillary's emails that darkened her chances for winning the election, and Trump said that Comey "showed guts" for having made his statement. Pence said seven times on Capitol Hill Wednesday that Trump acted only after receiving the recommendation to fire Comey from Rosenstein.

But Andrew McCabe, who became acting director when Comey was sacked, appeared in his place since Comey was no longer a government official.

It's unclear why Comey turned down the offer to speak to the committee next week.

The White House wouldn't rule out, hours later, the possibility that the president's three known conversations with his then-FBI chief were recorded.

Asked on MSNBC Friday about the dinner, former Director of National Intelligence James Clapper said Comey "was uneasy with it, just for the appearance". He denies it had anything to do with the Russian Federation investigation, but also says: "In fact when I made a decision to just do it, I said to myself, I said you know, this Russian Federation thing with Trump and Russian Federation is a made-up story".

These reasons contradicted the White House's assertions - and even the widely-disseminated termination letter Trump sent Comey - that the dismissal was based on the recommendations of Attorney General Jeff Sessions and Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein, who criticized Comey's handling of the email investigation into Hillary Clinton past year.

US Vice President Mike Pence said the firing had nothing to do with the FBI's Russian Federation probe, but Trump dismissed the claim in his NBC News interview on Thursday.

Trump also acknowledged that the FBI's investigation of the former secretary of state helped him during last year's election. Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.), Rosenstein has said he'd support an independent investigation into potential Trump-Russia collusion.

White House officials said Trump is considering almost a dozen candidates to replace Comey, including Texas Sen.

Others reportedly under consideration include South Carolina Rep. Trey Gowdy, former Michigan Rep. Mike Rogers and former New York City Police Commissioner Ray Kelly.
