Goa footbridge collapse: Death toll rises to two, rescue ops on

Curchorem (Goa), May 18 (ANI): Almost 50 people fell and 1 died in Goa's Curchorem area, when the Sanvardem bridge collapsed around 7:00 in the evening on Thursday.

According to eyewitnesses, the crowd had gathered on the bridge to watch fire and emergency services personnel rescuing a youth who had jumped into the river in a suicide bid. "But on Thursday, nearly 100 jumped over from the old bridge to this footbridge They invited the calamity", he said.

Locals said the footbridge was in dilapidated condition and had been closed for traffic for the past four years.

The rescue operation was going on until late night. Many were feared trapped under the collapsed bridge.

Doctors at the hospital said that Victor Daniel (35) who suffered injuries on his shoulder and head and Ramesh Shankar (23), a native of UP who suffered fractures on a leg and a hip, have been shifted to the GMC.

South Goa MP Narendra Sawaikar told the Goa Herald newspaper that "it was an unfortunate tragedy". Only pedestrians were allowed to use the bridge.

"Right now the priority is to recover the bodies", he added.
