Mr. Ailes denied wrongdoing.

Ailes was famous for his shrewd leadership of Fox, including his focus on airing conservative opinions and hiring anchors and reporters with big personalities.

In the face of sexual assault allegations, Ailes did not address the accusations in his resignation statement. The following in-house investigation by Fox News has already claimed Bill O' Reilly's job and prompted a forced vacation for Jesse Waters.

Ailes' death was confirmed by his wife Elizabeth Ailes in a statement.

Ailes started Fox News in 1996. His manner of death was ruled accidental.

He apparently fell, while at his Florida home and hit his head. He had many critics and like ALL of us his sins, but I remember a great patriot, friend and boss.

Ailes died Thursday at age 77. In 1967, Ailes had a heated discussion with Richard Nixon. The network eventually unseated CNN as the highest-rated cable news network and became one of the most popular cable networks of all genres, reaching more than 90 million households.

With news of his death, prominent Fox News hosts and guests shared their remembrances of a man who they say leaves a lasting legacy of altering the American media landscape and political discussions.

Former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee, a former Fox News personality and Roger Ailes' friend, is calling the former Fox chief "a genius".

"More than anyone, Roger knew how to frame the message and communicate it to the masses", Huckabee said.

A few weeks later, Nixon hired Ailes as a media adviser for his 1968 presidential campaign.

Roger Ailes, president of Fox TV, in the Fox TV control room on March 23, 1999.

"Regardless of the dark sides of his character, I can tell you - and I'm sure you guys have stories - fiercely loyal", Joe Scarborough said. Paramedics arrived within a minute and he was taken to a hospital.

No other details were announced.

Just prior to Fox, Ailes was a top executive at CNBC in the 1990s. He turned politics into entertainment and was the most important figure in the cable news history. I'll miss life, though. "RIP", Ingraham wrote on Twitter.

21st Century Fox and Wall Street Journal-owner News Corp share common ownership.

"A brilliant broadcaster, Roger played a huge role in shaping America's media over the last 30 years", Murdoch said in a statement to Fox.

In the wake of Carlson's lawsuit, NY magazine dredged up more allegations involving Ailes and the channel's biggest female star, Megyn Kelly, going back to the mid-2000s, when she was just a reporter at the network.

But he stepped down in 2016 amid allegations of harassment against him, including by a former Fox News anchor Gretchen Carlson.

And women continue to come forward and to file lawsuits against the company alleging they were subjected to sexual harassment and other discrimination.
