Driver in deadly Times Square crash heard voices

A Portage teen is dead and her 13 year old sister injured after a Navy veteran high on drugs drove his vehicle for three and a half blocks on packed Times Square sidewalks Thursday afternoon.

Police say a 26-year-old U.S. Navy veteran with two prior arrests for driving while intoxicated has been taken in custody after his auto plowed into 23 pedestrians in Times Square, killing one of them.

A report via the dailymail told of Rojas blowing a 0.0 when tested for alcohol along with initial testing coming back positive for drug substances.

Kelly Graves, 54, of Wisconsin, who was visiting the city on vacation, said she was near the Disney store on Broadway between West 45th and 46th streets when she heard a crash.

Police are considering the possibility that Thursday's deadly crash in Times Square was a deliberate act, two law enforcement sources said. He said he didn't see or hear anything until people around him began screaming, then he saw why.

"She looked out for her younger siblings [and] would always play with them", the relative says, noting that they hardly argued.

The driver was apprehended by police and civilians as he tried to run from the scene, authorities said.

Juan Soto, who is on a business trip to NY from his home in Chicago, told Sky News: "I came upon the scene - a gruesome scene with multiple victims on the sidewalk and the street".

"People were jumping out of the way, but he just kept going". Four people were critically injured but are expected to survive, officials said. The crash killed an 18-year-old woman, and the injured included her 13-year-old sister, police said.

People rushed to help the injured, who were lying on the sidewalk. Kenya Bradix, 47, said he saw a auto driving the wrong direction on 7th Avenue between 44th and 45th Streets, and then saw it crash.

Times Square averaged about 360,000 daily visitors in April, according to a tally by the Times Square Alliance, making it one of the most visited locations in the world. Victims had no time to react and scramble for safety in crowded Times Square, said Alpha Balde, a sightseeing-ticket seller. It was unclear when Rojas, who was in custody, would get a lawyer or face formal charges in court. He said he leaped out of the way to avoid being struck.

An eyewitness who shared the pictures on Twitter wrote: "What's happening in Times Square??"

Elizabeth Long, of Dayton, Ohio, told CNN she was walking to the Hard Rock Cafe when she saw a maroon vehicle heading toward her on the sidewalk. There are many areas where vehicles could be driven onto packed sidewalks or public plazas.

Times Square also has a heavy police presence at all hours of the day and night.
