Top Democratic Senator Chuck Schumer said he was "shaken" by the New York Times report.

McCain says Trump needs to "get it all out. and the longer you delay, the longer it's going to last". Trump disclosed classified information in that meeting.

Last week after the president fired Comey, a senior FBI official told CBS News "There is a whole lot of interfering" in the Russian Federation investigation. Comey "was doing what we tell people to do", said this former official. After the briefing, Trump "asked Sessions and Pence to leave", the source told CNN.

Democrats as well cautioned in broad terms that Trump's disclosures could also put US lives in danger.

Even the Republican Congress has to see that, right?

He told Comey that Flynn, who was sacked for lying to Pence about the content of his telephone conversations with Russian ambassador Sergey Kislyak before the inauguration, hadn't done anything wrong. Chaffetz's letter to acting FBI Director Andrew McCabe requests all memoranda, notes, summaries and recordings that relate to any communications between Comey and the president.

The letter gives the Federal Bureau of Investigation a week to produce the records. John Cornyn of Texas - have indicated they do not want the job.

Testifying before Congress is familiar to Comey, a former Justice Department official in the George W. Bush administration. But Comey did not say anything to Trump about limiting the investigation, replying, "I agree he is a good guy". "Quit investigating, damn it'". Republicans were more circumspect but also clearly upset.

Sen. Lindsey Graham said that Comey should testify before his Senate panel about his discussions with Trump over Flynn.

Mr Flynn's Russian ties are under investigation by the FBI and the House and Senate Intelligence Committees, as part of wider inquiries into claims Moscow sought to tip the election in favour of Mr Trump.

On Tuesday, for the second night in a row, Senate Republicans and Democrats were caught off-guard as they entered the chamber for a scheduled vote.

Buried in the Times report is a note that Trump asked Comey to consider imprisoning reporters for publishing classified information.

The associate also confirmed an account from the Times that Trump vented about media leaks during his conversation with Comey, and that the president expressed support for seeing reporters in prison. "I have my subpoena pen ready".

The memo is evidently part of a larger rumored paper trail the Times says Comey created to document Trump's alleged interference with the FBI's Russian Federation investigation.

"Revealing classified information at this level is extremely risky and puts at risk the lives of Americans and those who gather intelligence for our country", Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer said in a statement Monday.

Flynn is a retired general who became a prominent Trump supporter and surrogate during the campaign.

The New York Times first reported Tuesday that former FBI Director James Comey wrote a memo about Trump telling him that Flynn "is a good guy" and the FBI should drop an investigation into Flynn, citing sources who had read the memo. That person was not authorized to discuss the situation by name and spoke on condition of anonymity.

"I hope you can let this go", Mr Trump reportedly told Mr Comey after a White House meeting in February, according to a memo written by the ex-FBI director.

The FBI declined to comment Tuesday.

Trump fired Comey last week.

"The president has never asked Mr Comey or anyone else to end any investigation, including any investigation involving General Flynn", the official said.
