Cracks begin to appear in GOP's support of President

"The only way out [solution] is a special prosecutor".

Comey hasn't officially accepted the invitation, "but wants to testify publicly as soon as he can", one person who has spoken to Comey said. "I think something as material as that probably would have been something he would have shared, had it happened", he said. Another letter from the Senate committee, which is co-chaired by Sens.

The letter came after the Senate Intelligence Committee made a similar request for Comey's memos.

This comes on the heels of the bombshell report completely denied by the White House that there was a memo written by former FBI Director James Comey detailing a meeting where President Trump asked him to stop investigating Flynn.

"The President asked the FBI Director to shut down one investigation, then fired the FBI Director in order to shut down another investigation".

In a short statement, Mueller says, "I accept this responsibility and will discharge it to the best of my ability".

The appointment came amid a growing Democratic outcry for someone outside the Justice Department to handle the politically charged investigation.

At the top of the list were reports that President Trump had asked former FBI Director James B. Comey to drop an investigation into Michael Flynn, the former national security adviser.

It's a striking position for McClintock, of Elk Grove, given that he represents a solidly red congressional district where Trump trounced Democrat Hillary Clinton by 15 percentage points in the November presidential election.

Trump himself is helping investigators put all of those pieces together, through interviews, tweets and offhand comments to reporters, said Zeidenberg. Trump made the surprise move of firing Comey, head of an investigation into Trump and his campaign's alleged ties with Russian Federation, early last week.

Asked whom he trusts if it's Comey's word against the president's word, Amash said, "I think it's pretty clear that I have more confidence in Director Comey".

The committee also requested that Andrew McCabe, the acting F.B.I. director, hand over any related documents prepared by Mr. Comey about his communications with senior officials from the White House and Justice Department regarding the Russian Federation investigation - including the so-called Comey memo.

She adds that "a special prosecutor is the first step, but it can not be the last".

The comments by Maryland Rep. Elijah Cummings came as Democrats sought to force a House vote to establish an independent commission to investigate Donald Trump's ties to Russian Federation.

Oversight Committee Chairman Jason Chaffetz of Utah said late Wednesday that Mueller is a "great selection. Impeccable credentials. Should be widely accepted".

Republicans, though, rejected an effort by California Rep. Eric Swalwell, a Democrat from the San Francisco Bay area, to force consideration of an independent commission.

But he says, "you can not let them get you down". "It's obviously inappropriate for any President to be trying to interfere with an investigation".

The Comey memo caused alarm on Capitol Hill and raised questions about whether Trump attempted to interfere with a federal investigation, something that might constitute obstruction of justice and could potentially be invoked in an attempt to impeach Trump.
