The San Antonio Fire Department chief is asking for prayers after one firefighter was killed and two were injured while battling a blaze late Thursday.

Two firefighters went missing during the evacuation, Hood said.

Two firefighters were taken to separate area hospitals as priorities one and two but Chief Hood says they are both expected to survive.

The Express-News reports Scott Deem, who had been with the San Antonio Fire Department for six years, was part of more than 60 fire crews that were sent to the strip mall about 9 p.m.

One of them was taken to San Antonio Military Medical Center in critical condition.

There's no word on what started the fire. Because the situation was becoming too risky, Hood said the rest of the firefighters had to evacuate the building, leaving Deem behind. "But we had the risk of losing an additional 15 or 20 firefighters if we did not go defensive on the fire". However, conditions inside the building rapidly changed and may have prevented Deem from escaping.

The firefighters lined up on each side of the ambulance carrying Deem's body and saluted they left the scene, KENS 5-TV reported.

"[It's a] Very rough decision to leave a firefighter behind, and that's not what we do", Hood said during a media briefing.

Fighting back tears during the media briefing, Hood asked for prayers for the fire department. "But we're going to continue to do the good job that we always do", Hood said.
