Monday's event marked the White House's 139th egg roll event, which started under President James Madison in 1814. There was even a miniature press secretary podium where kids could try out Sean Spicer's job (insert obvious joke here).

US President Donald Trump hailed the strength of America as thousands of children enjoyed the time-honoured tradition of rolling hard-boiled eggs across the manicured lawn in his back garden.

I just want to thank First Lady Melania Trump. "On behalf of the president and [our son] Barron, we wish you great fun and lovely days coming ahead of us".

Though this year's Easter Egg Roll was smaller than last year's, which drew more than 30,000 attendees, Stephanie Grisham, spokeswoman for first lady Melania Trump, told The Washington Post that was by design.

"That has always been the plan, so yes it's true", Stephanie Grisham, communications director for the first lady, said in an email Monday when asked to confirm reports from several news outlets that Melania and Barron will move to Washington, D.C., this summer.

In the past years, the Obamas hosted star-studded egg rolls. On behalf of the president and Barron, we wish you great fun and attractive days coming ahead of us, and happy Easter.

Hundreds of kids scampered around the White House lawn on April 17 to see who could get their hands on some fun Easter eggs, packed with all kinds of delicious sugary treats like chocolate and gummy bears.

Mr Trump obliged, but after signing the hat he absentmindedly threw it out into the crowd, far from its owner, to cries of 'No!'. The president and his wife along with their ten-year-old son Barron joined children on a picnic table to write the letters. Military bands, a pop-rock band and a family circus performed for the crowd.

The first lady also took part in another traditional aspect of the Easter event, reading portions of "Party Animals", written by Kathie Lee Gifford, to the kids. Guests were invited to participate in various activities, games and musical events as well as the central Easter Egg Roll.
