"What can you say? It just never ends", he said of global terror threats after a gunman opened fire near the Franklin Roosevelt subway station.

At least two attackers are involved, with one on the run and the other killed, an interior ministry source confirmed. The armed man was so killed.

He said: "Our condolences from our country to the people of France, again it is happening".

"It looks like another terrorist attack. And I have been saying it for a long time", Trump said in response to a question as he was joined by Gentiloni in condemning the attack.

Trump was meeting with Gentiloni as news of the incident broke.

Thursday's attack comes days before the nation's presidential election on Sunday, which will take place under a state of emergency, which has been in place since November 2015.

Shortly before the ISIS connection was revealed, French President Francois Hollande also weighed in on a possible motive, saying he is convinced the circumstances surrounding the shooting in Paris suggest it was a terrorist attack.

The identity of the attacker wasn't immediately known, but Paris police said he targeted police officers along the high-profile Champs-Elysees shopping district.
