The U.S. Navy says an aircraft carrier that is intended as a show of force to North Korea will arrive in the region next week.

In Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, Mattis said: "The bottom line is in our effort to always be open about what we were doing we said that we that we were going to change the Vinson's upcoming schedule. We want to send an unambiguous message especially to North Korea that any attempt to use weapons of any kind against our allies in this region or American forces overseas will be defeated and will be met with overwhelming force", Pence said in an interview with CNN.

The USS Carl Vinson strike group includes the flagship aircraft carrier, its air wing, the destroyers USS Wayne E. Meyer and USS Michael Murphy, and the cruiser USS Lake Champlain.

Multiple US defense officials told CNN that Mattis had inadvertently misspoke and that it was a port visit in Australia that was canceled to allow for the group's redeployment to the waters near the Korean Peninsula.

An image from the U.S. military dated on Saturday show the carrier on a "scheduled deployment" at the Sunda Strait in Indonesia, several hundred kilometres south of Singapore. "That's what happened, that is happening, rather". "Very powerful, far more powerful than the aircraft carrier, that I can tell you", Mr Trump said last week.

"We said it was "heading" there", he said. "It ensures our - we have the strategic capabilities, and it gives the president options in the region", Spicer said.

His words came after the North held a show of military might in a parade over the weekend and tested another missile on Sunday, which blew up nearly immediately after launch, the Pentagon said.

From April 16-18, the website http://www.gonavy.jp/CVLocation.html reported that the Vinson was in the Indian Ocean.

North Korea staged a massive military parade on Saturday and observers widely expected the country to conduct a sixth nuclear test to coincide with celebrations marking the birthdate of regime founder Kim Il-Sung.

South Korea and the USA were discussing plans to conduct a joint exercise after the strike group's expected arrival sometime next week, an unidentified military source told Yonhap.

It was supposed to be steaming towards North Korea more than a week ago, an "armada" signaling American resolve.

This would have gone unnoticed but for a picture of Carl Vinson posted online by the US Navy, sailing south through the Sunda Strait, which separates the Indonesian islands of Java and Sumatra.

Last week, Trump said he sent an "armada" to Korea.
