According to an investigation by The New York Times earlier this month, Fox and O'Reilly, paid five women roughly $13 million to settle claims of sexual harassment against the TV veteran.

Hours after Bill O'Reilly was sacked amid swirling sexual harassment accusations, former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee went on the longtime Fox News anchor's old show and made an off-color analogy about not being able to "kiss a woman leaning away from you".

In a shocking reversal of fortune for one of the most prominent voices in TV news, Bill O'Reilly has been ousted from Fox News Channel amid the firestorm over sexual harassment allegations levelled against the host in recent years.

O'Reilly's departure follows the ouster of Fox News' former chief Roger Ailes, a close confidante of the company's founder Rupert Murdoch, also over sexual harassment charges.

"They could literally go dark during the time his program airs and they would still be profitable", Mr Wieser said. "I wish only the best for Fox News Channel".

He added: 'I will always look back on my time at Fox with great pride in the unprecedented success we achieved and with my deepest gratitude to all my dedicated viewers.

Fox News addressed O'Reilly's departure on Wednesday night, as the show that used to bear his name debuted as simply The Factor.

President Donald Trump, an avid Fox News watcher, had leapt to O'Reilly's defense following the New York Times report, calling him "a good person".

With a profit centre gone, 21st Century Fox stock fell nearly 1% on Wednesday in heavy trading.

Indeed, 21st Century Fox recently extended O'Reilly's contract for about $18 million a year.

O'Reilly had worked for Fox News since its 1996 launch, and the end of his career there came the same day the official Vatican newspaper, L'Osservatore Romano, photographed him shaking hands with Pope Francis in St. Peter's Square.

While O'Reilly hasn't responded publicly to the latest allegation, he has said generally that the allegations against him are completely "unfounded". You failed Bill O'Reilly.

New York Magazine's Gabriel Sherman, who wrote the book on Fox News' toxic workplace, reports the Murdochs are locked in an "intergenerational battle" over the fate of their network star; sons James and Lachlan appear ready to pull the plug, while their father, Rupert, has remained steadfast in his support of O'Reilly.

O'Reilly is also one of the country's most popular nonfiction authors. But Fox said Wednesday that wouldn't happen.
