For a switch, videogame sales jump, thanks to Nintendo

For hardware specifically, the Nintendo Switch outsold the PS4 and Xbox One in March.

The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild was a strong #2.

Nintendo's "The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild" broke records for a new Nintendo game sold at the same time as a new Nintendo game machine, in this case the "Switch" video game machine. Instead, Ubisoft's Tom Clancy's Ghost Recon: Wildlands was the best-selling game last month, likely due to Nintendo's unwillingness to share their digital sales figures with the NPD Group.

Bizarrely, however, the Nintendo Switch version sold 925,000 units, which is more than the console itself.

The Wii U version of Breath of the Wild sold 460,000 copies.

Coming in at #3 was the much maligned Mass Effect: Andromeda, but despite some early tech issues and controversies, the game ended up being the second-best Mass Effect launch title behind ME3.

The highly anticipated Andromeda, which finished March in the No. 3 position, failed to eclipse Mass Effect 3, which continues to hold the record for best launch, according to the NPD.

An expanded top 20 greets the Switch launch. This is the first reporting period to include Sony's Horizon: Zero Dawn, which launched on February 28. While we don't have the exact USA numbers, Sony reported that the outstanding Guerrilla Games title had sold more than 2.6 million units worldwide two weeks after launch, making it the best launch for Guerrilla in its history.

The other big news for Nintendo and their fans here is that lifetime sales of Zelda, as tracked by NPD (since 1994, which means that a significant portion of the series' lifetime is actually missing from the total), now exceed revenues of $1.5 billion in the U.S. alone- making this one of the most fearsomely lucrative game properties in the world. Switch accessories composed a quarter of the market in March to go with the consoles, and the best selling controller of the month was the Switch Pro Controller.
