10 killed as truck rams into shops in Andhra

Police said the truck with heavy load which was travelling at a high speed, lost control and hit an electric pole before crushing several people under its wheels. They were staging a protest before the police station demanding action against illegal transportation of sand from their areas, when the mishap took place. The driver and the cleaner of the truck fled the scene soon after the incident.

Yerpedu is at a "T" junction, leading to Tirupati, Srikalahasti and Venkatagiri towns and the accident spot is close to this junction.

The condition of six of the injured is critical and they were being shifted to CMC Vellore and Chennai. While PTI reported that the victims had gathered outside the police station to submit various applications, The Indian Express said the people who were injured in the incident had mostly been vendors.

Andhra Pradesh Cabinet which met today expressing grief over the incident has announced Rs. 5 lakh as ex gratia to the kin of the deceased.

Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu reviewed the accident and directed ministers and other public representatives to go to the spot immediately and extend assistance to the victims.

According to an eyewitness, the driver of the lorry coming from Srikalahasti and bound for Tirupati lost control of his vehicle on the highway.
